Patient Clinical Services

The dental hygiene programs at the Fones School of Dental Hygiene provide comprehensive dental hygiene care at its new state-of-the-art on-campus dental hygiene care facility from September through May. Services are available to the general public as well as to the University’s students, faculty, alumni, and staff. The clinic operates Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Thursday evenings between September and May, with the addition of Wednesday and Friday in the spring.

The goal of the Fones Dental Health Center is to assist patients in eliminating and preventing oral disease and in maintaining optimal health. Services include oral examinations, personalized home care instruction, blood pressure screening, X-rays, teeth cleaning, sealants, fluoride treatments, whitening agents and referral. Recommended fees are listed below.

The facility is staffed and supervised by licensed dental hygienists and dentists. Dental hygiene students, who provide dental hygiene care, have extensive education and training and have demonstrated competence in clinical services before being given permission to treat the public. The Fones School is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education.

Patient Responsibilities

The dental hygiene students have established schedules when they are available to give patient care. Since the goal is quality dental hygiene care within a teaching/learning environment, patient cooperation is essential.

Patients should understand that this is an educational setting and that the student’s learning experience and progress depend on the patient’s full cooperation. Everyone’s time is valuable. If for some reason a patient is unable to keep an appointment, advance notice of 24 hours is appreciated, to allow the student to arrange to treat other patients.

Upon arrive to your appointment, you will be asked to present a photo ID with current address or UB Student ID. Your ID will be scanned and maintained in our electronic records for patient identification.

Length of Appointments

Treatment at the Dental Hygiene Health Center proceeds more slowly than in private dental practice because patient care is provided by students and thoroughly monitored by the faculty. Preventive treatment appointments are usually one and a half hours to three hours in length, and many patients need more than one visit for the completion of services. The clinical staff realizes that the patient’s time is valuable, and they strive to keep to a minimum the number of appointments a patient must have.

If multiple appointments are necessary to complete treatment, no additional fee is charged to the patient. Clients receive non-discriminatory care and are charged according to the services rendered. Every client is fully evaluated through medical and dental history review and vitals, oral examination and cancer screening, and dental, periodontal, and accretion assessments. Clients receive oral hygiene instruction, oral prophylaxis, fluoride treatments, dental sealants, other preventive dental treatments, diet and nutritional review, and other procedures as authorized by the State of Connecticut Department of Health and agreed to by the client. A written referral is provided to clients who require further dental treatment.
