Laurel Risom is a Clinical Associate Professor with the Fones School of Dental Hygiene. She began her career with an AS from the Fones School, received her B.S. D.H. degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery and her Master’s of Public Health from the University of Connecticut, School of Medicine.

Laurel has an extensive amount of experience in dental hygiene education, private practice, dental public health, and research. She brings 10 years of clinical teaching skills to her courses and 30+ years of experience in clinical dental hygiene. In addition to Clinical education, Laurel is a Dental Public Health Pediatric rotation instructor, freshman clinic instructor and course instructor for the BS DH on -line program. She is a master’s thesis advisor and helps BS DH students locate non- traditional dental hygiene internships throughout the State, Fall, Spring and Summer for her BSDH Internship class.

As a long term resident of Connecticut, Laurel is familiar with the oral health needs of the Connecticut underserved. She is a collaborative care provider with other dental team members in community health facilities throughout the State. She is involved with Connecticut dental community out -reach programs, Mission of Mercy, A Healthier Connecticut by 2020 focus group member, and active with Healthy Resources in Action, Community Improvement Plan, for the Greater Bridgeport and Fairfield County in Connecticut. Laurel is a member of the Connecticut Coalition for Oral Health Awareness Outreach and Education Workgroup (CTCOH) and a Member of the Connecticut Oral Health Initiative. She encourages students to join her with these programs and share her passion for public health.

She enjoys teaching the fundamental clinical skills of dental hygiene to her students and is currently the principal investigator with a research project for Fones, investigating the use of videos for teaching clinical psychomotor skills. These research findings were presented with the Fones first year research team at the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA) Center for Lifelong learning (CLL) Scientific Poster Session last June in Boston.

Laurel has published papers in ADHA’s Access Magazine, the Journal of Dental Hygiene, Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Journal of Periodontology, the Journal of Dental Research and the CSDA Communicator. Laurel is a member of the public health honor society Delta Omega – Beta Rho and a member of Phi Kappa Phi.

Laurel is currently the Past President of the Connecticut Dental Hygienist’s Association (CDHA), an ADHA leadership merit scholar and has represented District II (CT NJ, NY, and PA) as a delegate at ADHA National meetings. She encourages students and graduates to be active and join their professional association.
